ComfortDelGro has appointed Cheng Siak Kian, age 52, who is currently CEO of its 74.43 percent-owned subsidiary SBS Transit, to the newly created position of deputy CEO, the land transport company said in a filing to SGX Wednesday.

The announcement confirms a Straits Times report Monday.

Cheng will concurrently hold both positions, with immediate effect, the filing said.

As deputy CEO, Cheng will work closely with Managing Director and Group CEO Yang Ban Seng, particularly focusing on the group’s overseas businesses and its global expansion policy, ComfortDelGro said.

“[Cheng Siak Kian] has proven himself in leading SBS Transit over the last two years. His extensive experience in running bus and rail operations, and his overseas experience well qualify him as deputy CEO. As part of staff development and succession planning, the appointment will expose [Cheng] to a broader range of issues in other aspects of our group businesses,” Yang, age 65, said in the statement.

Cheng will also take on the role of executive deputy chairman of SBS Transit, subject to re-election at SBS Transit’s upcoming annual general meeting (AGM) in April, replacing Yang, who is not seeking re-election, the filing said.

ComfortDelGro Chairman Lim Jit Poh said the changes were in line with the planned succession strategy.

Cheng had joined SBS Transit in 2015 as a senior vice president in the bus operations division, acting as an integral member of the team which was successful in winning the Seletar Bus Package, the filing said.

He had also been a commander of the air defence and ops command for the Republic of Singapore Airforce in 2014-2015 and a director of the policy office of Mindef from 2011 to 2014, the filing said.

He holds 16,250 shares of ComfortDelGro, the filing said.
