Sembcorp Industries entered a long-term deal with Experia Events to install, own and operate a 6.3 megawatt peak rooftop solar system on the Changi Exhibition Centre, the Singapore company said in a filing to SGX Tuesday.
The rooftop solar system will have more than 15,000 solar panels atop the facility’s 40,000 square meter exhibition hall, helping to power the onsite operations and channeling surplus power to the grid, the filing said.
Once completed, the system is expected to produce more than 7,840 megawatt hours of power annually, or enough to power more than 1,750 four-room HDB flats for a year, Sembcorp said.
Sembcorp estimated the solar energy system would avoid more than 3.2 million kilograms of carbon dioxide emissions a year, or about the same as taking 715 cars off the road.
“More and more companies are wanting to play a part in reducing their carbon footprint and Sembcorp is actively helping to enable their efforts in this, so that together we can contribute towards a more sustainable future for all,” Koh Chiap Khiong, head of energy for Singapore, Southeast Asia and China at Sembcorp, said in the statement.
Leck Chet Lam, managing director at Experia Events, said his company was pleased to contribute to sustainability by reducing carbon emissions.
“With a growing concern for the environment, we readily embraced the idea of an alternative energy source for the running of our business operations; especially for a mega-complex such as the Changi Exhibition Centre,” Leck said in the statement.
Changi Exhibition Centre, the site of the biannual Singapore Air Show, has a 30-hectare site located about 15 minutes drive from Singapore’s Changi Airport.
Sembcorp Industries has more than 130 megawatt peak of rooftop solar power capacity in operation and under development in Singapore so far, the statement said.
